Pain results from tissue injury or inflammation:

  • acute vs chronic
  • neuropathic – due to damage or dysfunction of the central or peripheral nervous system
  • nociceptive – somatic or visceral – due to stimulation of nocireceptors (peripheral pain receptors) and conducted by A delta fibers and C fibers (sensory nerve fibers)
  • psychosomatic – categorized as somatoform disorders – chronic pain disorders, somatization disorders, hypochondriasis
